Napa County Suing PG&E

Napa County Board of Supervisors voted in a closed session on December 19, 2017 to file suit and start litigation against an unnamed party.  The County has now identified Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) as the defendant to be named in its suit. Napa County joins Sonoma, Lake, and Mendocino counties in announcing a lawsuit against PG&E for its role in the deadly wildfires.

PG&E equipment is under investigation as a cause of wildfires that plagued Northern California last year, resulting in thousands of damaged or destroyed buildings and the loss of lives. Santa Rosa city investigators have released their determination that PG&E equipment started two of the wildfires in Santa Rosa. Investigation into the origin of other wildfires continues. In particular, power line reclosers are under investigation for their ability to fire and spark long after a power pole is felled.

PG&E has already announced plans to push costs of wildfire liability to their customers, and requested from the California Power and Utility Commission (CPUC) authority to open an account to track wildfire related costs. PG&E has further warned investors that it may be liable for wildfire damage. Equipment failure has been noted by regulators as the third most common source of wildfire.
