August 2020 – Updated Hand Sanitizer Recall
The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers again that more hand sanitizers have been recalled for the presence of methanol, wood alcohol, 1-propanol and other contaminants.
From the FDA Warning:
“Practicing good hand hygiene, which includes using alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not readily available, is an important public health tool for all Americans to employ. Consumers must also be vigilant about which hand sanitizers they use, and for their health and safety we urge consumers to immediately stop using all hand sanitizers on the FDA’s list of dangerous hand sanitizer products.
Symptoms of Methanol and 1-propanol Exposure Include:
- Central nervous system (CNS) depression
- Nausea and vomiting
- Decreased consciousness
- Slowed pulse
- Slow or labored breathing
- Blurred vision
Methanol is toxic even when just placed on the skin, unlike 1-propanol exposure which is primarily a cause for concern if consumed. Methanol contamination has been noted to be as high as 80%. While the most severe cases have followed ingestion of the product, methanol is hazardous even if limited to skin contact.
FDA Hand Sanitizer Recall List
The FDA has warned that lot numbers listed with recalls may be insufficient, as manufacturers are expanding the recalls in some cases. The FDA has recommended consumers avoid all product under a label if listed as potentially hazardous. The recommended action is to safely dispose of the product. Safe disposal methods include placing in a hazardous waste container, or following local waste management protocol. Please do not dispose of the mixture by placing down the drain.
What Do I Do If I Have Been Poisoned?
The FDA has requested adverse events be reported to their MedWatch system. You can complete the form online. To speak with a product safety attorney, Levin Simes Abrams can be reached at 1-888-426-4156 or [email protected]
