The women of Levin Simes lead both within the firm and in the courtroom. A recent study revealed that only 16 percent of multidistrict litigations (MDL) are led by women attorneys – leaving the world of MDLs largely dominated by male attorneys. This disproportionality of male attorneys existed even when the litigation involved harms that were only suffered by women as a result of transvaginal mesh products.
The women attorneys of our firms sought to change that. In 2013, Amy Eskin of Levin Simes was appointed co-lead counsel in the national litigation against American Medical Systems – one of the largest manufacturers of transvaginal mesh slings and prolapse kits. For the past four years, Amy fought for the thousands of women across the nation harmed by these defective products and sought to bring justice for the permanent complications these women were forced to suffer. Amy has won awards for her zealous advocacy including a 2013 Civil Justice Award by the San Francisco Trial Lawyers Association. Amy was chosen as a female Super Lawyer for Northern California in 2017. Amy is an invited member of the resource board for the National Association of Women Judges, and has served on Plaintiff Steering Committee’s such as Pradaxa and was elected as co-chair of the American Association of Justice’s transvaginal mesh litigation group.
Rachel Abrams is the lead partner of the firm’s mass tort medical device and pharmaceutical litigations with an incredibly extensive list of leadership appointments in several national litigations. Rachel co-chaired the Science and Expert Committee in In re Zyprexa and sat on the Science and Expert Committee for in the In re Depuy ASR Hip Implant litigation. She also sits on the Plaintiffs Steering Committee for multiple litigations including: In re Zyprexa; California State Sulzer hip implant litigation; In re Avandia, DePuy Hip Implant litigation; Mirena, Stryker Hip Implant; Testerone Replacement Therapy, as well as the transvaginal mesh litigation against all manufacturers of mesh sling and prolapse products, including Boston Scientific Corp. and Ethicon/Gynecare (Johnson and Johnson).
Serving alongside Rachel and Amy is a dedicated team of all-female attorneys. Meghan McCormick, Mahzad Hite, Sara Craig, and Nicole Moskowitz combined have decades of experience in the many of the nationwide litigations listed above and serve a central role in each litigation.
The female attorneys at Levin Simes:
Studies have shown that trial teams with women are more successful and win more often than trial teams consisting of only male attorneys. Every case that the Levin Simes firm has successfully tried before a jury was led by a trial team consisting of at least one female attorney. This includes a $208 million dollar verdict – the 2nd largest personal injury verdict in the nation that year – achieved by founding partner, Laurel Simes, in a grueling 4-month trial against an asbestos cement pipe manufacturer.
Currently the team at Levin Simes is continuing to fight for women’s rights against the manufacturers of transvaginal mesh, having settled many cases and continuing to take new cases to trial. Laurel, Rachel, Amy and the team continue to develop the litigation against manufacturers of talcum powder, which caused women to contract ovarian cancer. The staff at Levin Simes continues their fight for pregnant women and their children affected by the side effects of Zofran. We see our clients fighting against their diagnosis or against the system, and that inspires us to fight even harder for them and for justice.” - Laurel Simes Laurel Simes , Mesothelioma Partner
