May 4, 2017: Another large verdict came down against Johnson & Johnson for hiding the ovarian cancer risks of baby powder and talcum powder products. A Jury in Missouri found Johnson & Johnson liable for $110 million for causing the cancer of a 61 year old woman.
The damages were $5,401,921.02 for her injury, with an additional $66 million in punitive damages against Johnson & Johnson and $39 million in punitive damages against their subsidiary Johnson & Johnson Consumer Companies. The jury added $50,000 more in punitive damages against Imerys Talc America, another defendant. The total verdict was $110,451.921.02.
This is the fourth large verdict against Johnson & Johnson, for allegedly failing to warn consumers about the risk of talcum baby powder. Johnson and Johnson marketed these products despite safer alternatives such as corn starch existing on the market. The prior three verdicts were for 72 million, 55 million and 70 million.
