Teen Vape Use Nearly Doubles in 2018

Underage Vaping in 2018

The CDC has a new report on tobacco use among minors, and they are sounding the alarm over the results.  After years of progress to reduce the amount of teens consuming tobacco, tobacco use rose dramatically in 2018. Vaping in particular exploded upward, 4.9 million high school students now use tobacco products.

High school student use of tobacco jumped from 20% to 27% from 2017 to 2018.  E-cigarette and vape devices are primarily responsible for the increase, as teen vaping grew nearly 80%.

Vaping in High Schools

In addition to being the most popular form of tobacco use, vaping allows teens to consume nicotine more frequently and in higher doses.  Vaping a JUUL can be done in environments children would have difficulty smoking a traditional cigarette and avoiding detection. The CDC estimates the number of children who vape increased 1,500,000 in just the last year alone.

The CDC tracked both any use of tobacco and tracked which children vaped daily (more than 20 out of 30 days). This category of heavy smokers jumped from 20% of the vape group to 28%, meaning students who vape are also vaping more often. With 1-in-5 children vaping and 1-in-4 of those doing so daily, the number of kids who vape daily more than doubled from 2017. The CDC is growing increasing concerned these underage nicotine addictions will prove incredibly difficult for children to overcome.

Vaping in Middle Schools

Vape use among middle school children grew substantially in 2018.  Use of vapes increased 50% in a single year, from 3.3 percent in 2017 to 4.9 percent in 2018. Nicotine addition in such young children can lead to a lifetime of nicotine addiction, and increased risk of addictions to other chemicals or drugs. The FDA has warned companies like JUUL they may consider banning the products if this epidemic is not stopped.
