Edwin Hardeman of Santa Rosa sued Monsanto for causing his lymphoma cancer, the first person to do so in federal court. A jury in San Francisco has found Monsanto liable for causing Edwin’s cancer. Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (NHL) is a cancer primarily affecting the immune system. The jury is currently working to decide damages.
Roundup has been linked to cancers including Non-Hogdkin’s Lymphoma. In 1985 the EPA classified the main Roundup chemical glyphosate as possibly carcinogenic. The state of California has added glyphosate to it’s list of cancer causing agents, and the World Health Organizations (WHO) body known as the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) concluded in 2015 that glyphosate was a probable cause of cancer.
A jury in San Francisco found Monsanto liable for a man’s cancer in 2018, just as they have again in 2019. Dwayne Johnson sprayed Roundup around campus at the Benicia Unified School District and contacted the company about the dangers of the product. Monsanto internally discussed his inquiry but did not warn him about the dangers of non-Hodgkin Lymphoma from Roundup.
The jury awarded $250 million in punitive damages after learning all the details of Mr. Johnson’s use of Roundup, his attempt to learn about his skin lesions after using Roundup, his terminal cancer diagnosis and Monsanto’s failure to warn Mr. Johnson even after he directly inquired about the risks of exposure.
