Retail giant Justice at last recalls its “Just Shine” make-up products after undisputed testing showed the presence of amphibole asbestos fibers in the products marketed to tween girls. Asbestos is a known carcinogen that causes an always-fatal form of cancer called mesothelioma. There is no safe level of exposure to asbestos, particularly to the amphibole class of fibers found in the Just Shine products.
The presence of this deadly carcinogen was uncovered by the investigation of ABC 11 News, which had sent the Just Shine make-up to an independent lab for testing. Justice initially disputed the results, claiming their own test showed no asbestos present in the products. ABC 11 then sent Just Shine make-up to two more independent labs, both of which confirmed asbestos fibers in the product. One lab found 76 million tremolite asbestos fibers per gram in the “Shimmer Powder”. The product weighs 10 grams, which means the makeup would have contained 760 million fibers of asbestos.
Justice responded to this evidence by initiating a recall of the products.
